Many do not realize that the vast majority of clay courts in the Unites States and Canada are not really clay courts at all. They are actually composed of crushed stone that locks together to form a clay court like surface with a loose granular top dressing. Not only has good quality clay become increasingly difficult to obtain, over time court builders and court owners have realized that crushed stone courts are much easier to build and maintain and substantially less variable in the way they play.
Lee Tennis’ HAR-TRU brand of crushed stone surfacing is recognized worldwide as the premier manufactured “clay” court product. The first HAR-TRU court was installed in Maryland in 1931 and since that time more than 60,000 HAR-TRU courts have been built in 50 states and 23 different countries.
